Did You Know?

The ancestral home of the Tlingit people that currently live in Hoonah, Alaska, was Glacier Bay. They were forced to leave by advancing glaciers during the Little Ice Age, around 250 years ago. The Tlingits moved their village across Icy Strait to north Chichagof Island.

Getting to Juneau, Sitka, Petersburg and Gustavus

YWhen scheduling your transportation and vacation time, please consider that bad weather can effrect you travel in Alaska. Don't make your departure plans too close to your estimated arrival time at your destination.

Alaska Airlines serves all of our departure cities, including Juneau, Petersburg, Sitka and Gustavus. The Alaska Marine Highway provides regular scheduled ferry service between Juneau, Sitka, and Petersburg. Beginning in Cctober 2010, limited service will be offered betwen Juneau and Gustavus.

By Air

Alaska Airlines (800-426-0333) provides daily direct jet service to Juneau, Petersburg, Sitka, and Gustavus (from Seattle), and daily jet service to Gustavus (from Juneau). Air taxi service to Gustavus is available with Air Excursions several times times each day.

By Ferry

The Alaska Marine Highway System (800-642-0066) is a state-operated ferry. You can take the Alaska Ferry from Bellingham, Washington and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, all the way to Anchorage or Skagway. The ferrry stops at several Inside Passage communities, including Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Gustavus, Pelican, Petersburg, Wrangell, and Haines.

Each of the eleven boats operated by the Alaska Ferry offer observation decks, food service, and vehicle decks. Vehicle space is limited, and is often completely booked in advance of departure.
